What is it?
The word myofascial is derived from the Latin words “myo” for muscle and “fascia” for band. Fascia is a continuous web of membrane that runs throughout the body, creating both divisions and connections between our body’s structures. Fascia surrounds, infuses and protects every tissue, tendon, muscle, bone, ligament and organ of the body, following the pattern of how we stand and move.
How will Myofascial Release techniques help me?
If we stand or sit incorrectly, or hold our posture out of natural line for any period of time, the fascia can become “stuck” in that new shape. Hence, lifestyle, sitting at desks and indeed how we are feeling, all pull our fascia into incorrect shapes, creating restrictions to our mobility.
What happens?
Myofascial release techniques deeply, yet subtly, release restricted fascia. These techniques, which I tailor specifically to meet your body’s needs, involve pressure on and stretching of muscles and limbs. Whilst muscles can stretch relatively quickly, fascia requires a longer period of sustained pressure to relax. When working on the fascia, therefore, a client can sometimes feel that nothing is happening as the stretch is so subtle. With certain techniques the client feels a deeper sensation, so I always take care to work within your own comfort levels.
How will I feel afterwards?
The instant release of our fascia enhances massage treatments considerably. It increases range of motion and flexibility whilst allowing newly relaxed muscles to stay in good shape and pain free for longer.
